Port of Spain is the most
prominent urban center in Trinidad and Tobago, housing many of the country’s
commercial, government and administrative services. Residential settlement both
planned and unplanned is another major land use in POS. Urbanisation of POS is
taking place at a rapid rate, and is evident by the increasing infrastructural
development, resident and transient population. Pollution levels in POS and
crime are also increasing. These are common problems faced by many urbanized centers, and are managed through urban planning and management. In discussing
the fact that the urban street dwellers of Port-of-Spain contribute to this
environmental issue of pollution, it’s not solely their fault. They believe
that the solid waste around them are very useful if not now but it may become
useful in the future.

In our blog we go in-depth into street dwellers and waste which goes in hand with this post. In order to understand the different ways in which they pollute we looked at their activities and how it lead to waste accumulating (environmental issues). We also found that street dwellers can have a positive environmental influence on the urban space.
