Aid from Government Agencies

PHOTO BY THE TRINIDAD EXPRESS SHOWING FORMER MINISTER GLEN RAMADHARSING ASSISITING A HOMELESS MAN.

Within the past decade due to the rise in homelessness on the streets of Trinidad and its sister isle – Tobago,Government agencies have drawn up plans to implement services available for homeless persons in Trinidad and Tobago.  The former of Minister of the People and Social development – Dr. Glen Ramdaharsingh decided to have government offices assist in the  transformation of the capital city - Port of Spain - making it 'Vagrant-free'. Due to the fact that Port of Spain is the hub bub of social, administrative, business services etc., several citizens have spoken out about the deplorable and unsightly conditions of the capital which included the numerous street-dwellers.
Most of the Vagrants found in the city of Port of Spain were located in and around the very busy commercial areas where there were were several functioning business places. For example, some  they were found in front of Central Bank as well as Woodford Square.
In the photograph above, Dr. Glen Ramadarsing is seen assisting a homeless man at a function held to place the socially displaced. According to the minister this was and unpleasant site and hampering the process of development as he said  "the more and more vagrants, then you get less and less business, and the business that you get." I have strong feeling for and against this statement because, in a positive light it shows that the drive to assists these street-dwellers are based on economical gain but negatively shows moral weekness as looking at this human life as a mere bother to the system.
The short term project however, targeted to enhance the city temporarily for the Christmas season which aimed to house 200 homeless persons by Christmas. This plan seemed  unsuccessful as these homeless persons still roamed the street.
